Enhancing Southeast Asian Research Networks
A strategic regional initiative aimed at enhancing the technical capacity of National Research and Education Network (NREN) engineers across Southeast Asia through hands-on training on perfSONAR and FIONette Data Transfer Nodes (DTNs).
Workshop Impact
π―Project Objectives
To improve regional network engineering knowledge by training NREN participants in perfSONAR and FIONette deployment and performance diagnostics, creating a more resilient and collaborative digital infrastructure for research and education in Southeast Asia.
β‘Key Activities
- 3-day technical workshop hosted at NUOL in Vientiane
- Comprehensive training on perfSONAR and FIONette DTN tools
- Equipment distribution to participating countries
- Performance diagnostics and Science DMZ setup guidance
πKey Outcomes
- Up to 17 participants from 5 countries successfully trained
- Hardware distributed for immediate deployment
- Workshop content and training tools made publicly available
- Enhanced regional cooperation and knowledge sharing
π οΈTechnical Tools
Participants gained hands-on experience with industry-standard tools including perfSONAR for network performance monitoring and FIONette Data Transfer Nodes (DTNs) for optimizing high-performance data transfers across research networks.
πFuture Directions
- Continued technical support through online check-ins
- Tracking node deployments via MaDDash integration
- Regional knowledge sharing at TEIN/APAN meetings
- Creation of permanent learning modules and repositories
β οΈChallenges Addressed
- Logistics challenges in equipment shipping
- Attendance optimization through pre-workshop outreach
- Post-workshop application support and follow-up
- Geopolitical and environmental adaptations
